The ADRMS, or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, is the main body that offers credentials for diagnostic medical sonographers, vascular techs and other allied health positions. It isn't always required to receive credentialing, but a lot of employers prefer workers who have credentials from the ARDMS - that's according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the U.S. If you would like to get certification, you will need to complete training from an accredited program and pass the credentialing exam.

Instructions

Step One: The first step that you will need to complete is training from an accredited program in diagnostic medical sonography, vascular technology or another allied health field. These healthcare areas usually require two years of training for an associate's degree.

Step Two: Next step is to obtain the necessary amount of vascular or ultrasound experience. Whichever training program you have completed, you will need to gain additional clinical experience.

Step Three: Decide which of the specialties and credentials that you would like to obtain. You can choose between being a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation, Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer and Registered Vascular Technologist.

Step Four: Go to the ARDMS website and apply and pay the application fee. Once you complete the application online, you can mail in supporting documents.

Step Five: Plan when you will take your exam. You are required to complete the exam within 3 months of the Examination-Confirmation Letter. You can find testing centers in a variety of states.

Step Six: Study for your exam. You can find sample questions on the ARDMS website. Try completing the 30-question test exams.

Step Seven: Finish the exam and do the best you can do to pass. At the exam, you will need to bring along two forms of I.D. You will be given a password in your Exam-Confirmation Letter as well.

Step Eight: Obtain your certificate packet once you pass the exam. This could take up to six weeks. From there, you will need to maintain the certification by paying an annual fee, which is around $60 as of 2010, and obtaining continuing education credits every three years.
