In the medical field, nurses play a very important role. In the nursing profession, you are required to assist with patients within hospitals, clinics and a variety of other medical facilities. One day you could be helping a patient that has the flu and the next you could be helping a patient that has diabetes get a healthier lifestyle.

Assessing nursing skills is required to ensure that he or she has the basic understanding of patient care and medical procedures.

Instructions

Step One: When you're interacting with patients, you will need to pay attention to them closely. When you're assessing the skills of a nurse, you will need to see how she is working with the patient. What is her body language like and how well does she use her words when talking with patients? Also, keep an eye on how she conveys information to the patients. Does she address concerns about procedures and treatments that the patient has?

Step Two: The next part of the nursing skills assessment is to see how well she administers medication. This is a very important role of the nurse, so it is important that she is able to do it. This means that the nursing professional should be able to insert IV lines into the patient and has knowledge of how to keep the line functional. Ensuring that the patient is getting the right amount of medication is also necessary. Following orders given by the physician should also be assessed.

Step Three: Does the nurse know how to chart? This is an important duty that nurses have as well. Being able to keep track of a patient's progress is vital.

Step Four: Take a look at the nurse's foundation of knowledge. Being able to understand the basic health care procedures and keeping the environment sterile is important.
