LVN or LPN, meaning licensed practical or licensed vocational nurses are a part of the health care team, encompassed under the category of nurses, meaning that they give direct health care delivery to patients in general or specialized settings.

The LVN- LPN jobs available are currently many and varied. In most states, as well as the entire United States, a critical nursing shortage is underway. LVN-LPN 's as well as RN's are not being graduated frequently enough to satisfy the growth in population that is taking place in the United States.

Particularly states such as Arizona, Nevada, New York, Alaska, Nebraska, and several others face the immediate need for more nurses, where few are available for hire. LVN-LPN jobs are plentiful in nearly every area of the United States.

Currently according to statistics by the Bureau of Labor and Industry there are about 750,000 practicing LVN-LPN's in the United States, while more than 900,000 will be necessary to meet the staffing requirements by 7 years from now.Graduation takes a year or more from an approved school of nursing. Educational requirements, clinical practice time, and State Board of Nursing, NCLEX examinations are necessary to gain state licensure in all fifty states.

LVN-LPN work requires, in most states, 12-16 months of schooling at a technical school or a community college. In addition to these requirements for classroom training, clinical practice time hospitals, nursing homes, cancer care units, or dialysis units are necessary for graduation.

In addition to the educational requirements the various states each require certain types of licensure, and sitting for an examination is a prerequisite of that licensing.

While you are being educated for your LPN/LVN work you may expect to study-

*Medical-Surgical Nursing
*Care Planning
*Wound Treatment

As the population continues to grow in the United States, it is expected that the nursing shortage will continue to be exacerbated. Nursing schools, states, and other governmental agencies have undertaken various methods of encouraging healthcare careers, particularly nursing careers.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics states in their nursing occupational outlook projections that the LVN-LPN jobs will continue to rise at a far more rapid rate than other job categories.

Overall prospects for LVN-LPN jobs is excellent. The most lucrative LVN jobs will be in nursing care facilities, hospitals and home healthcare venues.

Between just 2008 and 2018, only 8 years away, the LPN jobs are expected to increase by more than twenty percent, which is much more rapidly than the averages for nearly every other occupation. This increase will be in response to nurses leaving the healthcare field, many of them permanently, but also in response to the increasing needs of society for skilled nursing care, and an increase in the number of aging and elderly citizens.

LVN-LPN jobs will continue to rise over the course of the next few years. With an already strained health care system and nursing shortages in current healthcare arenas, the shortage will likely continue and LVN-LPN jobs will in many cases remain open without qualified applicants.
