There are basically nine sectors of heath care when it comes to the nursing profession. They are:

  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Assisted living facilities
  • Physicians
  • Dentists
  • Other healthcare such as psychologists
  • Outpatient centers
  • Ambulatory health care
  • Diagnostic laboratories
The hospital is the number one place one would expect to find nurses when it comes to healthcare. The wide range of medical care provided in hospitals can range from diagnosis by running tests to surgery to permanent nursing for chronically ill patients. There are also different types of hospitals which require different types of healthcare jobs.

Nursing homes have a need for healthcare nurses to monitor the residents and provide healthcare services for those that need them. For those who may have a healthcare need on a daily basis the nurses take care of these and keep the doctor apprised of any changes or if the necessity arises for immediate care.

The assisted living facilities utilize healthcare workers on a daily basis for the residents that may need special care and to check on them in the event they need care and do not realize there is a problem.

Physician’s offices have nurses who take care of patients who come to see the doctor. They are employed by the doctors and they work in a private setting and have normal business hours.

Dentist’s offices employ nurses to help take care of the patients who are normally in for minor surgeries and sometimes cosmetic surgery. The routine fillings, caps, crowns, and preventative maintenance are performed with the nurse assisting the dentist.

When looking for a job in healthcare nursing there are various other types such as home healthcare jobs which entail a nurse being hired to take care of someone in their home. The visiting nurse could also be classified as a home healthcare worker. There are many healthcare jobs online to choose from if you are looking for a particular field or area in which you want to work.

If you are looking for a position and want to begin by working towards the nursing job one good way to start is to check into assistant healthcare jobs. The requirements for this field are not as stringent as nursing and it is a good place to start. As the largest industry, the health care employed 14 million people in 2006, out of which 438,000 were self-employed. The highest percentage worked in hospitals followed by nursing homes and physicians offices.

The number of positions that are healthcare related which require a degree or certain educational requirements are quite high in number but this gives the prospective healthcare worker quite a few choices. Some of the healthcare related positions are:
  • Anesthesia
  • Nursing supervisor
  • Traveling healthcare worker
  • X-ray
  • Surgical nurse
  • Radiology
  • ICU
  • Educators
  • Clinical nurses
The healthcare workers tend to be older and do not move from these jobs at the rate that other workers move from job to job. This is thought to be due to the education and training that is required and the cost involved for many types of healthcare jobs.

Registered nurses normally are required to have a bachelor’s degree in a specific field or even higher education in another field related to healthcare. The registered nurse may also earn an associate degree to start and further their education while they are working. There are other healthcare professionals that require much more education and there are those who have either very little or no special degrees or training. These may include the following:
  • Nurse’s aides
  • Home health care aides
  • Dental assistants
  • Certain medical assistants
  • Personal and home care aides
The home care aides may be employed so that ill people can stay in their homes instead of the hospital or a nursing home. Although many of these workers take courses to certify themselves and further their education so they can become registered nurses, it is not required. Some states may mandate certain criteria for the home health care worker.

If the home health care worker is going to receive money from Medicare for their work, the Federal law requires that they pass a competency test which covers many subjects. The training can be taken before taking the test but it must be passed before Medicare will consider them for a home healthcare aide.

There are other Federal requirements for nursing aides who are employed in nursing care settings. The government mandates that they must have no less than 75 hours of training which is state-approved and they also must pass a competency test. When this is completed the aide will receive recognition as a certified nurse assistant.

This prospects for more jobs in this profession naturally are more in demand in areas in which the population is more concentrated. The job market for healthcare nursing jobs is higher in Los Angeles, California, New York City, N.Y., Phoenix, Arizona, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Washington, and Tampa, Florida, Houston, Texas, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

When considering what type of healthcare nursing you may want to train for, the occupation that pays the most is a registered nurse who makes about $28.12 when employed by a hospital. A licensed practical nurse makes approximately $16.89 and dental assistants make about $14.76. Medical assistants make around $13.15 per hour and nursing aides about $11.06. Home health aides are the lowest paid and they make about $9.34 per hour.
