If you have ever thought of a career in nursing then you have considered one of the most in–demand jobs in America. Many people begin their nursing careers as certified nursing assistants or CNAs.

Becoming a CNA

The first thing you must do is complete the training required in your state to become a certified nursing assistant. The rules will vary from state to state. The minimum requirement usually involves seventy-five hours in courses on nursing assistance. These courses will rely heavily on hands-on training. You will likely spend a few days in classroom training, but the rest will be spent on the floor, learning from nurses how to care for patients.

A CNA job consists of providing basic care for patients in various settings. You could work in a hospital, a long-term care facility or in a patient’s home. Each of these places has a high demand for qualified CNAs. Perhaps the most rewarding both personally and monetarily are private nursing jobs.

Private nursing jobs will be carried out primarily in a patient’s home. In some areas, there are what is referred to as home-health agencies that employee private-duty nurses and CNAs. Here the nurses will travel from home to home and provide care for the patient in areas such as bathing, feeding, medication monitoring, and even light housekeeping in some instances. Working in an intimate setting is much different from the clinical feel of a hospital or facility; patients are often times more open and relaxed and are therefore easier to treat.

Occasionally someone will need a nurse around the clock in his or her home. In this case, the family will often hire several private-duty nurses to work in shifts. As private nursing jobs go, this is one of the best positions to have. You will work exclusively with one patient from hospital to home and anywhere in between.

Getting a private nursing job is more difficult, because this kind of service is expensive and there are few who need it or can afford it. However if this is an avenue you wish to pursue, here are some proven strategies for landing the position.

Be Visible

When you are working with patients in a care facility, be visible to the family. Answer questions to the extent you are allowed, and be kind to them as well as to your patient. Many private nursing jobs begin with the relationship formed while you are carrying out your CNA job. When the patient and the family feel comfortable with you they will be more inclined to request you, should the need arise for a private or in-home CNA.

Be Diligent

Do not miss work or approach your CNA job halfway. Be diligent in carrying out all your duties in a cheerful manner and without complaint. No one wants a crabby private nurse who complains about things all the time. When a family needs to fill a CNA job in their loved one’s home, their first stop many times is the nurses’ desk at the hospital or long-term facility.

Advertise

Do not be afraid to sell yourself; get the word out that you are available for private duty by taking an ad out in the local newspaper and let people know via word of mouth. If no one knows you are available, chances are slim that you will find any type of CNA jobs.

Agencies

Across the Internet, and more than likely in your city, there are agencies that employ private-duty nurses and CNAs. Put in your application with any and all that you find appealing. When you do, you will have yet one more feeler out for potential positions. Plus, this is a good way to garner consistent work, since many times private CNA jobs will only last until a person has recovered from an injury or illness.

Build a Portfolio

As you are working to further your career, put together a portfolio of recommendations, information on your continuing education, and patient references. If you have worked with a particular physician who was impressed by your work ethic and/or abilities, let them know you are seeking to get into private nursing jobs. Physicians are often the ones to recommend that the family seek this kind of service, and if you are the first name the doctor thinks of to tell them, you may get the referral.

Travel

If it is in your lifestyle to do so, consider traveling. There are private nursing jobs that come available where a perfect candidate must be willing to travel. This can lead to being paid to visit exotic places. Wealthy families often travel extensively, and should they be in need of private nursing, you will travel as well.

Relocate

Not everyone can do this; family considerations many times prevent nurses from being able to relocate. Therefore, if you are able to compete on a national or even global level, CNA jobs become limitless. There is a high demand in some areas for in-home care, and not enough certified nursing assistants are available to fit the bill. Open yourself to the idea of relocating, and you could cut your job search time considerably.
