Nursing work is both a rewarding and enriching profession that one can engage in as one seeks to find one's niche in the world. If you have the acumen to be in the first line to receive the sick and injured; if you have nerves to handle irate and often panicky patients; if you have the steady hands to soothe a child in pain; and if you have the drive to excel in your craft, then nursing work could be the best job for you.

Nursing work is an accessory profession to the medical healing arts. Nurses are the ones given the responsibility to assist doctors and specialists in life-and-death situations since the nurse’s expertise is in providing adequate and professional medical support for the patient. There are many types of nurses for the different specializations in medicine. There is nurse employment at the emergency room, the operating and delivery rooms, the psychological wards, nurses tending to those already admitted and confined in the hospital, and even nurses that handle the administrative aspect of hospital operations.

So how can one become allowed to perform nursing work? First off, you have to be admitted into nursing school. Many universities and colleges around the country offer courses to earn a degree in nursing. Nursing schools provide both the artistic and technical aspects of nursing work. Individual courses in the program include medical term abbreviation, medication administration techniques, nursing ethics, anatomy, normal vital statistics, and vital drug information. After receiving your degree, you cannot automatically work as a nurse. You need to pass licensure exams to be able to be granted the privilege to practice your craft. The rigorous set of exams covers a wide range of subjects and topics that you should have learned in school. As soon as the results come out and you meet the minimum grade requirement, you can start looking for a nursing job.

Nursing is about experience, and experience can only be gained if you are where sickness and pain are present. Nursing work really took flight during the Crimean War with the work of Florence Nightingale. She was appalled by the conditions of the soldiers who were wounded and injured with the doctors in the field unable to care for all who needed help. By being in the forefront she was able to establish the profession not only as a means of work, but also as a means to serve fellowman in the alleviation of pain associated with injury. It was also through her nursing work that bedside care and management become the central focus of a nurse. Bedside care includes not only managing the prescribed medical regimen for the patient, but also providing a lending hand and a ready ear for those undergoing the pain and trauma of rehabilitation and recuperation.

It is not only in pain and suffering that a nurse thrives, it is also in providing able assistance to those already on the road to full rejuvenation or to those at the throes of old age. The wide and encompassing range of services that nursing work provides would make one who underwent it well equipped to handle highly stressful situations with ease.

Finding employment in nursing has become easier. Many jobseekers employ nursing agencies to be able to find registered nurse work. An agency asks for the work preferences of the nurse, be it for geriatric care or surgery or administrative work, then the agency finds suitable employment opportunities that cater to the guidelines laid down by the nurse. In this way, even while the nurse is still undergoing training to improve his or her skills and knowledge, the learning is not disturbed or impeded by such a menial task as searching for nursing employment. The schedules for the interviews and examinations would be properly scheduled so that there would be no conflict that would ensue in the future.

So how can nursing work provide the rewards and bestow the enrichments of the profession? In the current financial crisis, the demand for nurses is still increasing despite high costs. It is because the care for the sick and the elderly knows no price limitations and the best care must be provided at all times. The prime component of this overall health plan is providing for nurse employment in medical facilities all over the country. The pay makes the profession both rewarding and enriching, as the nurse is not only one of the highest-paid professionals in the healthcare industry, but the demand for their services provides the options to take on two or even three jobs which is in essence rewarding the professional care provided by the registered nurse. It is in this aspect that nursing work and the profession as a whole can expand one’s horizons if one just has the discipline and drive demanded of its practitioners.
